once upon a time is a great beginning… it usually sets the premise about a story… the time..the context…the conditions thereof… the reader or listener is willfully ready to travel to the time and place that the story teller is addressing… so easy to believe really! now if we add the word India to the phrase once upon a time … suddenly millions of visuals and sounds come rushing thru the door of my mind and are vying with one another to say that they are the better representation for India… in the midst of all this infighting of thoughts and ideas…i have my own little experience and perspective…the one that unknowingly makes me think the way i do…certainly part of the whole truth..but not the truth as a whole… coz I too have only been a part of a certain time in India… and have access to only the few other times that I have heard about or read …other people’s points of view…
so what is this once upon a time that i have in mind? or rather…what part of time can i speak with authority about? time itself is passing by all the time and we yet its such a constant…
so once upon my time in India brings to mind the tricycle rides with my best friend neighbor in patel nagar in new delhi…i was about 3yrs old…the sultry afternoons with power cuts and no great modernization in recreation yet achieved… we used to sing some popular songs and ride the tricycles till as long as our mothers find us missing from the house…
there was a neem tree on the pavement near the crossing…a few meters from the the porch of our rented house… we had a little verandah where the tricycle-athon would happen in the quiet of the delhi summers….the verandah was a common one which was shared by about 4 sifferent households…in the same complex……
near the neem tree was a cycle shop which rented bigger cycles…the ones we both would ride some day soon…but back then they seemed too dangerous and hard to handle…how cud anyone ride only on two wheels??? seemed so impractical…how bad will the balance become!?…and then people complain about accidents… we were convinced that three wheels are better than two wheels… nevertheless…later on in life we were bound to change our opinion and how!
the neem tree had a look of eternity on it…like its been there from the times of the pandavs or even before…and may just have given them shelter in similar sweltering conditions during their exile…what poise! what a strong appearance it had! In fall the neem tree threw down some seed like fruits…yellow with a soft center… and they were so many that it wud cover the enitre foot path around the tree. As people walked by they cudnt avoid stepping on the seeds that wud make a squishy and irritating sound…i used to hate that sound…really! and sometimes avoided going in that direction for the same reason… the cycle shop was owned by an old gentlman…he seemed to me a very content and calm person…never fretting over anything…he used to breeze threw his days with total control without begrudging anything… he was probably muslim or sikh coz he had a long beard…more white than black and used to have a sort of turban/cap… he wore very dirty and wierd clothes…somtimes his pajamas would be worn so high that his ankles and lower calves cud be seen…sometime he wore a sleeveless sweater too… but the important thing for me and indeed for us is that we both wanted to get friendly with this man…coz our future lay in his hands…very soon when we sud start liking two wheel bikes…he was the only one in the whole of east patel nagar who cud fulfill our dezire… so we both started early enough… we wud just hang around the shop and make polite conversation from time to time… many times just touchand feel the cycles standing there and gettin a high…nothing seemed more exciting than this… and then suddenly my mother wud come searchign for me and find me wasting time in the shop and whisk us boys away… till another time when we wud come back and continue building our future relationship with the cycle shop…and the old shop keeper…
will be back for more…in Once upon a time in India:-))
Hey World,
Am back after a really long gap. Been really busy with work etc.
Feel compelled to write about the changing weather phenomena in Mumbai city and the world at large.
We are experiencing the coldest winter ever in the living history of any body I know of in Mumbai.
To top it all, its very windy. Night temperatures have been dipping progressively for last few days…
For the average Mumbaikar(Mumbai Native), there is no concept of severe winters, thus it becomes a wardrobe issue aswell… one finds people covering themselves with whatever that comes close to being warm… as a result the oomph quotient with female clothing is also taking a beating…everone is covered from head to toe…lol
Cafes and public dating spot must be reporting lower sales due to the loss of valuable scenery…
As a result of that, thecafe owners have a harder time shopping for their women folk…and thus the cycle goes on…
One cant fail to recognize the catastrophic levels the problem has reached owing to the above mentioned reasons…its high time the state government provide solace to the needy men and the down trodden teenagers who have been forced to work extra hard to get a nice view in the this time of national mourning…
One wonders if the leaders will finally wake up to the situation and offer interim relief by inviting younger female volunteers from the tundra regions- especially Scandinavia who will dare to bare in this chilly weather. Its reported that these volunteers are infact, equipped with far greater ability to bare in the chilly weather than local female species in these latitudes.
Well, finally one can only hope that the help and rescue operations are begun on a war footing basis and all the victims are provided with immediate and urgent scandinavian attendance and care in as private and homely an environment as possible…
The rest has to be seen to be believed…lol
Cheers!

hey world,
its funny how life moves us all our lives…
we get introduced to a whole new world constantly…
thats life….like a lot of people say…
and friends come and go…some stay…some move on…some become indifferent…some get involved…and some are neutral…
but they surely become a part of our lives…and irreplaceable part of our existence…
im at one such crossroad on life… am seeing a new side of many of my friends…
some nice and a lot of it strange…
trying to understand it better… but i guess there isn’t much to read into it…
so let it be…just let it be…
and cheers to life…and all the new people coming into ma life…
i wish them all the best in their lives!!!
Cheers!

Hey world,
An interesting thing happened today… we were in the middle of a story meeting about a new show we are developing… as we were through with the discussion with the top boss and all was agreed upon, we decided to take a break and then get back to discuss the characters…
all was going well and then my intelligent boss decided to prove his mettle… he dragged us into a needless argument regarding one of the characters. everyone besides him has a consensus on it and he simply refused to budge form his black and white world where everyone had to be at the extreme end of the spectrum…pitch black or spotless white…
we all refused to give up and kept holding our fort till he gave in…
basically the point he was trying to make was that every character should have a great motivation in their life or he is a useless… our point was that there are many such characters who are happy like they are and dont necessarily have a great plan for life…but that is what makes them interesting and complex characters to work with…especially when we are moving away from stereotyped characters..
what is your opinion???
Cheers till later…

Hey World,
yesterday was India’s sixtieth Independence Day. Its been that long since we found our freedom from the British rule…a feat unparalleled in history till date… a lot of debate goes on if we truely have emerged as a nation or are we off course…
i wonder if there is one answer for that one… and who is to evaluate that?? the people who truely sacrificed their lives for this independence are either not living anymore or made redundant by society and our governance… and the younger generations are pretty much on their own trip…
through various phases, we have today reached a situation where we have seen the extremes of joy and sadness as a nation…many times over… and yet we are not united as a nation… this is a fact that is reflected across many cross-sections of our country… political/ social/ economic/ our policies and interests are always at loggerheads….maybe that is the perfect democracy too… and maybe we would always be like that… united on the surface and disunited underneath…
my wish is that we reverse that trend…even if we are divided on the surface, we must unite deep down…its this unity that has kept us together for centuries… and some day we are the pioneers of this philosophy of universal brotherhood in this part of the galaxy… India must become independent of anything that stops us from uniting …that for me is true independance… and this feat would add to the glory of our nation and also show the light to the rest of the world…
CHeers!
and Happy Independence Day!!

hey world,
today was a big day for my team…we had to pitch to a channel with a show… all three of us- vats, sri and myslf are the creators and thus very passionate about it…in the end it went of well with me butting in at crucial points as vats narrated …sri was very quiet as the he is unwell with food poisoning…
it all boils down to selling…it seems the world is one big sales organization…and all of us are salespersons…selling to survive…make a living…find some occupation…satisfy our existential cravings…other desires…and then one fine day we die…and a whole lot of selling happens to ensure we get a good farewell… strange but true…where does it end???…like some one said:” how many miles must a man walk…before you can call him a man?…the answer my friend is blowing in the wind…the answer is blowing in the wind…”
a large part of our lives are spent fulfilling these needs and by the time we realize, life has gone by…the same holds true if one wants to own a house in a city like mumbai… the rates are so high and out of reach that a large section of -even the professionals- never end up being a home owner… if you do take the plunge…you must end up paying a hefty sum for the rest of your life… and in turn you are ensuring that you have a lot of stress constantly hounding your mind and life-stress to cough up an E.M.I. every month- regardless of what situation you are in, unwell, disaster-struck,alive or in coma…lol … and just imagine – at the end of your life, you are left with nothing but a house to show for all that you have been able to achieve in a life time…its so humiliating…so small to write home about…but that little pigeon hole is the greatest objective for a majority of us common people in this maximum city. and like it or not…im dreaming about it too…some day i want to have a little home for myself in this city where i dont have to worry about moving out at the end of 11 months and no one hounds me with increase in rents…but it may take some time friends…considering that no one really gives a loan to media professionals and one has not had a great amount of fortune coming till now…so may be i will /maybe i wont…”
till later…cheers!!!
one of India’s most path breaking films… the story of three childhood buddies…their journey..their coming of age and finally coming back together…
rushing in for a meeting…
will be back for more folks…
Cheers!
